Recently, I found my Dad’s journal and digitized pictures that he kept when he traveled to China a few years after it opened to the west and allowed tourists.
Note on people mentioned: Jim Thomson was Dad’s cousin. Jim grew up in China, where his father taught chemistry at Nanking University, and he continued to study China, including being the China specialist on the staff of the National Security Council in the Kennedy administration. His brother John also grew up in China. Betty was Dad’s step-mother.
