Madikwe game reserve is an amazing place. It was about a four to five hours drive north from Johannesburg, right on the border with Botswana. It’s on the edge of the Kalahari desert, and was very hot while we were there. (Although we were told it’s just the start of summer, and that by December, it would be even hotter.)
In spite of what our travel documents said, the first few hours were not very interesting. Then we reached the gate of the reserve.
This was looking promising.
The drive through the park to our lodge was about an hour. It was pretty cool.
We got to our lodge, and were greeted with a glass of champagne and a pretty amazing bungalow.
The pattern for the three days was simple: up at 5:00 am for a few hours drive, back for breakfast, then several hours to lounge and relax (or, in our case, sleep) then an evening drive until after dark. Then dinner, and more relaxing. It was very hot, and we were fairly jet lagged, so our afternoons were spent in our rooms napping and reading.
