In town

Next day we joined a tour and rode up to Cerro Pelon.

There were some monarch caterpillars on tropical milkweed (evidently it’s not as good as normal milkweed.)

The horses were small and sturdy, and each came with a handler from a local village. The guides had a list and rotated through, so everyone got an opportunity to make some money. We rode a relatively level, wide path for a bit, then paused and got our first look at the swarm of monarchs.

Next, the trail got very steep. Sheila’s horse was unhappy, and the kid leading it had to pull hard several times to get it to keep moving.

But, eventually, we got to the end of the trail, and hung out with butterflies for awhile.

We had lunch, and headed down the mountain. (I found this much scarier, and it was my horse’s turn to balk at the trip. But, we made it down.) And our butts were pretty sore. More socializing that evening, and I practiced taking pictures of the moon.
