Thursday – Snow! And Junction Butte pack

Totally different weather today – snow! It limited the visibility in the park.

We looked for wolves at Blacktail Plateau. The Wolf Project knew they were there – radio telemetry, and one person saw them take off after an elk. But no other sightings. Matt tried several places to get a scope on the wolves, but they were hidden in a gully. So we headed to the east of the park.

Boreal Owl on a road post – it flew off when we drove by. Later in the afternoon when we were driving back we saw it again on the post. It must really like the location.

We saw dippers, Rosy finches, buffalo. (Lots of buffalo.)

Got to Silvergate and Cooke City. There were foxes all around Cooke City. People probably fed them. There were also some popular bird feeders

After getting souvenirs, coffee, and ice cream, we drove into the west side on the park. Once we got back in radio contact, we heard that wolves were in sight. We drove to where the Wolf Project was located and pulled out the scopes. The wolves were laying down, mostly. Occasionally standing, walking around, and lying down again. It was the Junction Butte pack – so the third pack for us this trip.

If you don’t see the wolf, click to see it highlighted.

The wind blew, it got pretty cold, so we decided to move on. The Wolf Project people had to remain there until it go dark.

We slowly made our way towards Gardiner. This evening we had a talk on “The Wolf in the Mirror – The Evolution of Wolves, Dogs, & The Human Psyche”.

After dinner, all eight of us on the tour went out to the only bar opened in Gardiner, which our guide called “The Vegas of Yellowstone” (it had a casino). It was a fun evening.
