Danum Valley Rainforest Lodge

Onward to Danum Valley – a rare undisturbed lowland jungle area. It had never been logged or developed, and had been preserved for conservation.

One of the few places to stay was at the luxury Rainforest Lodge. When we were dropped off, we were met by someone who showed us to the second floor, and then someone came to us to bring us tea and introduce us to our guide (Dave), who then presented us with our itinerary. There were four others in our group. After Tabin, it felt crowded and over-planned – we had been spoiled. We were then led to our room.

Our rooms were large, luxurious, and overlooked the river. There was a long desk where I could work on my computer, a separate sitting area, and outdoor shower.

Sheila showed off her leech-proof socks.
The river in the background was very brown – it had been raining hard earlier.

The first item on our itinerary was an “Introductory video”, which was basically an advertisement for the lodge where we currently staying. Useless, and annoying.

Then, we went on a jungle walk.

We started on a boardwalk
But then walked a muddy trail.
The jungle was thick, and there was plenty of mist, so there wasn’t a lot to see.

On our way back on a road, we saw a new (to us) monkey species – the Red leaf monkey.

We went back to the lodge, had a lovely dinner, and went out for a night drive. But the jungle was much thinker than Tabin, and didn’t have the palm plantation to lure animals to cross roads, so we didn’t see very much.
