On the River – Day 1

The lodge put out fruit every morning, and there were plenty of birds to take advantage of the bounty.

Raul reviewed the rules of jaguars sightings – the boat that saw it first got to be in front, don’t stand up if someone is behind you, and stay quiet. He said sometimes we would navigate away from a jaguar trying to anticipate where it would go.

We got in our boat and headed out.

Cocoi heron walking in middle of river.
The river was very shallow – our boat got stuck occasionally.

Our first stop was a small cove.

The kingfisher really wanted to make sure the fish was dead.

Stopped for howler monkeys – one had a baby.

Further down the river we found a boat watching a kite watching the boat.

Plumbeous Kite, I think

Then – we suddenly broke off from our viewing and zipped down the river. We found a crowd of boats.

Out first Jaguar sighting.

She was just hanging out, so after we got enough photos we went a little ways down river and saw another one – hanging out.

Word went out the first one was moving, so back we went.
