O’Reilly’s Rainforest Lodge

We got up for an early morning bird walk. We brought our binoculars, and I brought my telephoto lens. Turns out, we didn’t need them.

The guide assured us that the forest service okayed feeding the birds, and the amount and content was carefully monitored. It was very easy to see the birds.

After breakfast, we took a popular walk to Morans falls. Then we returned by a meandering trek through the rain forest, past the “wishing tree”. We spotted several birds that we had seen much closer on the walk.

We wandered down to check out the spa, then I took a walk on the canopy trail (which I found terrifying) and in a botanical garden (which looked to me like the rest of the forest – I’m not good with plants.) I found the start of the Border Trek trail that I plan to hike on Wednesday (16 miles to the next lodge – Sheila will drive.)

Another gorgeous sunset, and then on the glow worms.

Okay – turns out they are glow maggots, the larvae state of the gnat moth, and between the bright half-moon and lack of recent rain, they put on a meager show. But it was a fun walk through the dark woods to the location where we barely saw them.
