Maria

We were just finishing breakfast, with an elderly woman came in and introduced her as Maria. Turns out, she was the woman who founded the school that our lodge was connected to. She was delighted to hear that we were from America, and wanted us to tell everyone to come visit. We were some of the first tourists to come after Covid.

She is an amazing, and inspirational, woman. She went to the United States for school on a Fulbright scholarship in the 60s, and came back to Tanzania to teach and empower women. She started teaching in government schools, and in 1982 founded the Mama Clementina Foundation school (Clemente was the Italian nun who ran the boarding school where she want to school.)

She gave us a tour of the school.

The school children ranged from three to secondary school age.
Teacher and students in classroom
When we looked into each classroom, all the children rose and recited “Good morning, visitors. Welcome! How are you?”
Metal cross on building
When Pope John II came to Tanzania, he held a service in the stadium next to the school. Several years later, the platform he had stood on was collapsing, so someone at the school took the cross and brought it to the school.
