Lions of the Serengeti (continued)

We drove some more, looking for other cats. There were cheetahs, but far off the road. You need a special permit to leave the road.

We drove to an area without trees, or other features.

Antelopes were easy to see here – but they usually were. Plenty of other animals and birds, as well.

Two kinds of antelope, plus Thomson’s and Grants gazelles.

There were some more cheetah and lions, but far away.

Lion on a hill

As we drove back, we passed several rock outcroppings. Jamal looked closely for leopards, cheetahs, and lions. And we did see lions.

Lion cubs

We drove back, and as we were approaching the lodge, we saw vultures dropping from the sky onto a kill. We watched them a few minutes, then a hyena came dashing in and chased them away. He chomped down on the bones, then tore off a piece and headed away.

Hyena with leg.

However, at that point, four lions showed up, and two of them headed straight for the hyena and grabbed the bone. They both wrestled for it a bit, and one emerged triumphant.

Drama over, we went back to the camp and relaxed.
