As is typical of most flights in and out of Lima, we flew from Cusco fairly early in the morning, and weren’t scheduled to fly out until after midnight. We didn’t have any real plans, so we first went to the Plaza de Armas (main square) to view the colonial buildings.

We didn’t feel like going into any of the buildings there, so we went back to Mira Flores (where we had stayed at the start of the trip).
Lima is built on a cliff overlooking the ocean. There is a busy business in skydiving off the cliff and sometimes through the city.

Patricia was trying to convince us to do a tandem jump. Sheila and I were reluctant. Then a gust of wind caught one of the foils, and we watched someone go down below the cliff.

Fortunately, he landed on a ledge. A rope was found, and the crowd all joined in helping pull him up.

As it turned out, he had a broken leg. We decided not to try out the skydiving today.

For dinner, we went down to the pier and had another excellent dinner at La Rosa Nautica and looked out on the water and occasional surfer.

Then, we caught a cab back to the airport and flew home. Patricia and I (flying to Washington state) had a relatively problem-free trip — although she did get delayed getting from SeaTac to Spokane. Sheila (flying to Washington DC), on the other hand, had a different trip:
“My trip back was a not-very-funny comedy of errors. I spent the night in the Lima airport and flew out at 8:00 am. When we approached Atlanta there were bad thunderstorms so we circled for a while and then were diverted to Birmingham Alabama to refuel. We finally landed at Atlanta around 7:30 pm and we had missed all our connection so we had to get in another line to rebook.
I got booked on a flight leaving for Washington at 9:40. At 9:30 they announced that the plane was on the ground and making its way to the gate and that we should depart by 10:15 or 10:30. At 10:15 they announced a gate change so we all went to the new gate which did not have a Delta representative at it. Then the board at the gate changes to say our flight will be leaving at 12:30 am. Eventually we tracked down a Delta employee who was very unhelpful and acted annoyed that we were bothering her. She did eventually mention that a different delta flight was leaving for Washington in a few minutes and maybe we should try that one. So a whole hoard of us pelted down the terminal a full speed and jumped on that plane.
So, I got home at 1:00 am eastern time, 27 hours after the odyssey began. I went and picked up my luggage this morning and came into work at 11:00. I am very happy to not go near an airport for a while.”
