Western Canada road trip

Road trip through Western Canada – leaving Seattle, I’m driving to Spokane – Banff – Jasper – Prince George – Smithers – Port Hardy – Vancouver – Seattle. The Banff – Smithers will be leisurely, since it was originally a bike ride. Now it’s a car – bike – hiking – whatever else trip. Once I get to Smithers, I’ll spend a few days with Odyssey friends, then head back to Seattle without much dilly dallying.

I’ll post pictures as I can.

  • On the road June 29, 2018 The trip begins! I got most, though not all, of the items checked off my list. Unfortunately, I left a little too late in the afternoon, and the traffic over the pass added over an hour to my trip. I arrived in Spokane to stay overnight with Patricia and her just-wandered-in-and-decided-to-stay cat, Salem. I had checked the weather ...
  • Travel Day June 30, 2018 Left Spokane early and had an uneventful drive to Banff. The scenery got better and better, and once I got into the park, I was looking for bears. But didn’t see any. Banff was crowded – this is the start of the high season, and I arrive the day before Canada Day (tomorrow there will be ...
  • Banff to Johnston Canyon and back July 1, 2018 Bow Valley Parkway biking: 32 miles; 500 feet First day was a lovely, short ride up the Bow Valley Parkway and back. It’s a peaceful ride on a winding road. Although wildlife is often seen on the road (they say), I didn’t see anything besides the tail of a white tailed deer and an eagle. I guess it’s ...
  • Lake Moraine July 2, 2018 Larch Valley hike: 6.5 miles / 1,700 feet With the warning about parking getting full from yesterday (and the weather report saying rain by noon), I got up at 6 AM and arrived at Lake Moraine by 7:15. Even then, the parking lot was pretty full. But, I managed to park, take some pictures of the ...
  • Lake Louise July 3, 2018 Plain of Six Glaciers hike: 6.7 miles Today, my luck ran out – it rained on and off all day. The report said it was going to get worse as the day proceeded, so I started early (up at 6 AM again), and hiked the Plain of Six Glaciers from the end of Lake Louise.  It was ...
  • Bow Hill July 4, 2018 Bow Hill bike ride (48 miles) Today the weather was better – and reports said it would slowly clear as the day went on, so for once I didn’t get up early. Still, I dressed warmly, and started riding back the way I came. I was a few miles into my ride and I suddenly thought “did ...
  • Icefield Center and Wilcox Pass July 5, 2018 I wanted to get to the Icefield Center before the crowds, so I got up early, choked down breakfast (why did I buy gluten-free, carob chip beet oatmeal?), and headed back on the Icefields Highway.  The road is beautiful – lots of views of mountains, and icefields! (Now this would have been an awesome bike ...
  • Jasper July 7, 2018 Gondola I had shopping, I had laundry, but I had missed the other gondolas in Banff and Lake Louise, so I decided to go up the one in Jasper (although I find the ride terrifying.) These birds were very hard to see in the rocks, until they moved. Going up, I managed to take a few pictures. Going ...
  • Robson Park to Prince George July 11, 2018 Kinney Lake Hike (Berg Lake Trail) On Sunday, I hiked longer than I have all year – 10 miles – along the Berg Lake Trail. I didn’t get to Berg Lake, since that’s about 22 kilometers one way, but Kinney Lake was a worthwhile goal. It rained a bit when I got there, but fortunately, there was ...
  • Bryan and Theresa in Smithers July 18, 2018 Finally, I got to Smithers, and visited my friends from Odyssey bike ride.  While there, I went on a bike ride, and some hikes with them. The area around Smithers is beautiful! They have a great place, with a large garden, a pond, and field with deer, moose, and bears wandering through.
